Month 11: May 11 - Jun 11

May 11 - Grant weighs 16 lbs 7 oz, only 6 ounces more than last month.  He has gained half an inch in height, for a total of 27.5".  Considering he was sick for much of last month, this isn't too shabby.
May 17 - Grant points at something for the first time. He was showing us the ceiling fan.

Month 10: Apr 11 - May 11

Apr 11 - After being sick yesterday evening, Grant ran an axillary fever of 38C overnight.  Today he is exceptionally clingy and not his usual active self.  He weighs 16 lbs 1 oz, is 27" tall and has a head circumference of 17.5".
Apr 13 - Grant seems to be recovering from his gastro bug but has now caught a cold from his Mommy.  Poor little munchkin is sniffly and sneezy and has a runny nose.
Apr 16 - Grant crawls on his knees so that he won't drag his belly and junk on the cold tiles of the bathroom on his way to the tub.  Haha.
Apr 20 - Though not always in context, Grant's new skill is shaking his head "no".

Grant spent much of this month sick.  He is still happily cruising around using furniture, walls and people if need be to steady himself.  He loves opening drawers and looking inside.  Sometimes when he is supposed to be sleeping he stands up in his crib and then cries out.

Month 9: Mar 11 - Apr 11

Mar 11 - For breakfast Grant ate an entire banana and a handful of Nutrios all by himself.  He has a healthy appetite sometimes!
Mar 13-18 - Grant's first vacation!  There was a lot of swimming and fun in Fort Meyers, Florida with Grandma Adele and Grandpa Des.  Grant flew on his first plane.
Mar 19 - Grant's fine motor skills are improving.  Today he was able to put all 3 of his balls, one by one, into his giraffe toy.
Mar 22 - Not wanting to eat his breakfast, Grant signs "milk" to his mommy.
Mar 25 - Grant climbed the stairs for the first time.  It took him several tries but he did it twice.
Mar 26 - Grant is now an expert at climbing the stairs.  He has really gotten good at pulling himself up using whatever is nearby.  He will also take steps if you hold him and walk with him.
Mar 30 - Mommy found Grant standing up in his crib leaning over the edge babbling to himself and drooling onto the carpet at 4am.  Time to lower the crib mattress to the last setting!  Today at lunch Grant signed "more" for more toast with hummus and apple slices.
Apr 2 - Grant has really begun to cruise around when standing up.  He started by moving from one side of his activity table to the next side.  Soon after he began moving from one surface to the next by reaching out to whatever was nearby.
Apr 6 - During nap time sometimes Grant is up to no good.  Today Mommy found him in his crib surrounded by washcloths that he must have pulled off the side table through his crib bars.
Apr 10 - Grant attended his first birthday party which was for his friend Jackson Desaulniers.

Grant's big milestone this month is pulling himself up.  Not a few days after successfully doing it in his Pack'nPlay, he became an expert at doing it against his activity table.  Sometimes Grant likes to pull himself up and then turn around to reach for mommy - this has led to cruising along his toys and the furniture.  He really gets around!  He also likes to stand up and look over at the other side of things.  He has discovered that everything has a back and underside.  Occasionally he will take two toys and bang them together but he has not started clapping yet.  This month has also seen many new sounds - the consonants "b" and "m" (in addition to his earlier "g") as well as shrieking.  Toward the end of the month he started showing signs of teething again but no teeth have yet to be seen.  His hair is getting a lot longer and often sticks up in every direction after a good nap or bath.  On the last day of the month he had his first ever projectile vomiting incident followed by his first unmistakable diarrhea - it appears he may have a gastro bug, which explains why he was uninterested in eating for much of the day.  Poor little guy.

Month 8: Feb 11 - March 11

Feb 12 - For the first time, Grant sticks out his tongue.  He continues to do this all day long much to our amusement.

Feb 15 - We went swimming at the Frank McKechnie Rec Centre.  Grant has really gotten the hang of splashing with his hands and kicking with his feet.  He will even do both at once if you float him on his tummy.  What a good little swimmer!  He loves to grab at sprinkling water and loves to see it pour out of things.
Feb 16 - He is beginning to move forwards on his belly.  A day later he is purposefully propelling himself forward to reach for things.  This is the beginning of crawling!  He must be going through a growth spurt because he slept for 14 hours (waking only at 5am briefly) until 8:30am and then took 2 2-hour naps during the day.
Feb 18 - Grant is blowing raspberries like nobody's business.  He is also fond of pulling off his bibs and sticking out his bottom lip with his tongue.
Feb 21 - After a bad nap day, Grant sleeps almost 14 hours through the night.  In the morning we find Grant's bottom 2 teeth have cut through the surface!
Feb 25 - Grant is really getting good at standing while holding onto the edge of things.
Mar 4 - First meal with utensils.  Grant picked up his fork and spoon by the correct end more than half of the time.
Mar 6 - While in his Pack 'n Play, Grant pulled himself up to standing.  He seemed very proud of himself, as were we.  Our little boy is getting so big!
Mar 9 - Grant weighs 15 lbs 15 oz (7.22 kg) and is 16.5" (67.5 cm) long.

This month Grant has really gotten mobile in many ways.  He is fond of peeking... around things, behind things, through things.  He blows raspberries and sticks out his tongue to entertain himself.  In terms of sleep, Grant sleeps about 12 hours a night, with one waking.  He typically has 2 naps, with one being 2 hours long and the other being one hour.  He is eating like a champ and enjoys anything we put in front of him.  He is starting to get better at putting smaller foods in his mouth and, although still very messy, is getting less food on himself.  He is developing his pincer grasp very well and loves eating kamut puffs in his Activity Centre.  At the end of this month we started seeing success in taking naps without a swaddle.  He is still really enjoying swimming lessons and loves to splash around in the water.  Grant is very interested in standing and we spend a lot of time letting him hold himself up against other surfaces.  His army crawling has gained speed and he will often wiggle away when we are trying to change his diaper so he can investigate all the fun things he can get his hands on.  He is getting into everything!

Month 7: Jan 11 - Feb 11

Jan 11 - Grant weighs 14 lbs 12 oz and is 25" tall.  Only 11 oz more than last month.
Jan 12 - For the first time, Grant has picked up a ball and turned it around in his hand to look at it from all angles.  His manual dexterity is growing by leaps and bounds every day!
Jan 13 - Our first day trying out the 2-3-4 nap schedule for 2 naps a day.  Grant made it only until 1.5 hours before showing sleepy signs for his first nap, but then he slept for 1.5 hours and was still happy by the time his second nap was due 3 hours later.
Jan 19 - Grant is purposefully rolling onto his tummy now and can flip his arm out  from under him.  Once on his tummy he sometimes wiggles his arms and legs as if he's trying to swim.
Jan 21 - We dropped Grant's crib mattress so that he would not roll himself out of bed.  Grant also figures out how to drink out of his sippy cup, but only when he is lying down.
Jan 22 - We added the bumpers to the crib so that he would not bonk his head during his 5:30 am wiggle around the bed.
Jan 23 - 2010 baby reunion with the Community Midwives of Halton.  The power goes out after bedtime and Grant freaks out because his white noise machine has gone silent and his night light is off.
Jan 24 - Grant figures out how to drink out of his sippy while sitting up but still needs help to tip the cup.  He is not particularly hungry all day and has rosy cheeks, but still no teeth.
Jan 25 - We had gnocci for dinner and Grant was able to pick up the little pieces and even attempt to open up his hand to eat the pasta he is holding.  He played a game where he offered his food to mommy and daddy, thinking it was great fun!  Grant has a rough night for the second night in a row.  He wakes a few times very upset.  In the early morning he cries because he has rolled onto his tummy in his sleepsack and is stuck.
Jan 26 - Grant and mommy go to see his second movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 1.  Unlike at the last movie, he is awake for most of the movie.  He watched the previews and the beginning of the movie, then fell asleep for 30 mins and was awake for the rest of the movie, mostly playing with his toys and watching the images on the big screen.
Jan 27 - Two successful naps without the swaddle, the first for an hour and the second for two hours!  Grant is now able to spin himself in a circle on his tummy by creeping with his hands.
Jan 28 - Two more successful naps without the swaddle!  We are on a roll. :)
Jan 29 - Started signing a few words with Grant.  Hopefully in a few months he will catch on and start signing back to us.
Jan 30 - We noticed a tiny white spot on Grant's bottom gums.  Could it be a tooth, finally?  Today was Grant's first meal in a restaurant... he had teriyaki beef and avocado nigiri.
Jan 31 - Grant's second trip to the swimming pool, this time for a playdate with his little friends.  He loved it!
Feb 3 - Grant sleeps from 10pm to 7am without waking for the first time, and does this again 2 days later.  Could this be the end of his 2:30am dreamfeed?
Feb 7 - Grant has his first diaper rash.
Feb 8 - While sitting on the carpet, Grant tips over and faceplants into the coffee table.  He has his first bad bruise.  :(
Feb 10 - At our 8-month well-baby check up, Dr. Rezvani says that Grant should be in commercials.  He now weighs 15 lbs, 7oz and is strong and healthy.

Grant is experimenting with the noises he can make.  Sometimes he wheezes, squeals or coughs.  He likes surprises and laughs if you make the same sound over and over, then change it suddenly.  He reaches for things and often catches us off guard with what he can grab while seated in his Bumbo, including Roz's dish of treats.  Since sleep training, he is still waking up at 5:30 in the morning to chat with himself or play semi-quietly.  Sometimes he goes back to sleep again but sometimes he stays awake until we give in and get him out of bed at 7 am.  He is constantly rolling around now which makes diaper changes infinitely more difficult.  He is starting to be amenable to  napping on his side or tummy, though sometimes he doesn't like it and gets frustrated.  Grant is finding so many things funny, like sounds that Roz makes, shaking out the laundry, and he laughs very hard.  The sound of his laugh is wonderful!  While on his tummy he can spin in a circle and he is trying to reach for things but has not quite figured out how to move forward or backward.

Month 6: Dec 11 - Jan 11

Dec 11 - Our family went to a photographer to mark Grant's half-birthday and to get holiday pictures done.
Dec 13 - At our 6-month well-baby check-up, Grant weighs 6380g (14 lbs, 1 oz), is 65.5 cm (26") tall and has a head circumference of 42 cm (16.5").  Dr. Rezvani lets us know that Grant is doing great and can start solids now.
Dec 14 - Grant reaches for his first food, a Rice Krisipie Square from his Daddy.
Dec 17 - First day of solids.  Grant's dinner consists of roast chicken, sweet potato and broccoli.  He seems to like the chicken best.
Dec 18 - Grant has a Farley's biscuit for breakfast and a dinner of steak, baked potato and zucchini.  He really liked the potato and steak but had little interest in the zucchini.  He managed to swallow a bit of potato.
Dec 19 - Avocado was on the menu this day.  Grant seemed to like it but was frustrated at how slippery it was.  He did swallow some of the avocado.  He had his first successful nap in his sleep sack - 3rd nap of the day and it lasted 1:42.  He was put to bed in his sleep sack but it did not go well.
Jan 4 - After rolling further and further onto his side, Grant finally rolls all the way over from his back to his tummy.
Jan 7 - Grant has spontaneously decided to try blowing raspberries.

Around week 25, Grant started having trouble sleeping at night and began waking less than an hour after going to bed and needed assistance to get back to sleep again.  By week 26 and into week 27 he is screaming in protest about going to bed and even for naps.  Perhaps he is overtired?  He doesn't seem to be teething or sick or hitting a developmental milestone and his mommy and daddy are frustrated because they can't help him.  Grant's first Christmas was a very busy and exciting time for him.  He was spoiled by everyone!  Being diligent about naps, he managed to be a fairly happy little guy.  He was unable to get to sleep due to the ruckus on Christmas Eve but aside from that he napped and slept well enough while away from home.  Grant tasted many different foods at Poppa Levack's on Christmas Eve and he did exceptionally well with Christmas Dinner at Grandma Morrow's - destroying a large piece of prime rib, some boiled carrots and potatoes.  We began sleep learning when we returned home which was not pleasant but very necessary.  After a week he is almost sleeping entirely through the night but naps are a bit slower to follow and are hit and miss without the swaddle and soother.  In his activity centre, he has learned that pushing the buttons will make the music play and finds this highly entertaining.  He squeals when he is excited.  He is also learning to blow raspberries and after a couple of days of mostly spitting, he has figured out how to make his lips vibrate.

Month 5: Nov 11 - Dec 11

Nov 11 - Grant successfully finds his thumb for sucking during his afternoon nap.
Nov 13 - We took Grant swimming for the first time.  He seemed to enjoy the water and was amazed by all the sights and sounds at the community centre.  He was a little upset at being dunked, but was ok with it once he knew his parents were there to keep him safe.
Nov 16 - Grant was able to stand by himself while leaning against the furniture for a few seconds.  He rolled from tummy to back again; both to the left and to the right.
Nov 22 - Mommy took Grant to meet Santa.  He was a very well-behaved little reindeer and gave us a big smile for the picture.
Nov 25 - We met Grant's Cousin Arthur for the first time and marveled at how little he weighed compared to our big boy.
Dec 3 - Opened up Grant's Christmas present early... a Baby Einstein Discovery Centre.  He seems most interested by the purple discs and the spinning bird.
Dec 6 - Went to see Santa again with Grant's baby friends.  Grant discovers that he can reach out and touch the baby in the mirror.
Dec 10 - Mommy and daddy leave Grant with a babysitter (Aunt Kate) for the first time so they can attend a Christmas party.

Grant is getting more adept at reaching out and grabbing hanging toys.  He can sit unassisted for a few moments before tipping over.  He still does not enjoy tummy time but can lift his head and chest up high when in the right mood to do so.  He is fascinated at watching his parents eat.  He is able to nap for an hour or more with the right conditions and we are practicing allowing him to nap this way at least once or twice a day.  He is still waking up at least 3 times a night however and generally sleeps for only 3-4 hours at a time starting at 7PM until 7AM.  He has caught on to the game of peek-a-boo and will laugh when he sees his mommy or daddy.  He also laughs when raspberried on the belly or chin, and when mommy or daddy make funny voices.  He has mastered jumping in his Jolly Jumper and prefers to listen to music while he moves.  Toward the end of the month he started making clicking noises with his tongue for fun.  He makes these noises while watching mommy and daddy eat and is fascinated by seeing us chew or drink.  He is practicing for when he gets to eat food too.
